RE: Converter Box

There is no way you can possibly install between the amplifier (Which is part of the antenna) and the antenna.. What you think is the amplifier is in fact the power supply and switch. You need a converter WITH analog pass through. and the converter is the last thing before the television itself Like this {Everything else}======{converter}====={Television} Just curious as to why you think a converter box with "anolog pass through" is necessary? I have tried the cheaper model without the pass through feature and all worked well.

RE: wind noise

Get married and take the wifey along. The little annoying noise in the back of the rig will go away. But the passenger seat will get a little squeaky. Or, cheaper yet, use the latch on the outside of the vent, as previously suggested. I carry a stick under the seat to reach the vent latch easier.

RE: what does your bucket list consist of ?

The very last thing I want to do is: To die in my sleep, like my Grandfather did. Not like the five screaming passengers he took with him, in his Class A Motorhome.

RE: Haul Road in winter

Yes, It can certainly be an adventure. I would think that more RV'ers would like to come up during winter than those that do, but apparently not. The state has been spending lots of money attempting to create a winter tourism industry, but so far, only the Asian communities have bought into it. They come over to concieve their children under the Northern Lights, as it is supposed to make them smarter adults. I would highly recommend each of you drive up here in winter and experience it at least once.

RE: Oil Oil everywhere...what shortage?

None of the reading I have done on the subject would indicate a shortage of oil. What I have learned is there is a definate shortage of refining capabaility and the few we do have are extremely expensive to operate, due to the Pshyco-Enviro-Greenies demands they have successfully lobbied for in Congress. Our politicians have been duped or in some cases bought off and left us in a helpless/hopeless situation. We could turn it around, but it would take years. Prior to the construction of the Alaska Oil Pipeline, the Greenies were lined up in court with all kinds of lawsuits to prevent it from happening at all. The President signed an Excutive Order with Authority that stated the pipeline construction would happen and that was that. No lawsuits would be allowed to be heard from any court in the land. It was a drastic measure, but that is what it took and it could happen again, if the right person was in office. The is no shortage, you can get all the fuel you can afford to pay for. As a side note, the Governor of Alaska is calling the legislature back into Special Session to deal with the Energy Crisis Costs to Alaskans. She is touting a $1200 pay out to each Alaskan to be paid in September, to help offset the high energy costs. As for myself and others I know, I will probably just continue heating with wood and judiciously spend some of the money on dancing girls, booze and a new big screen TV, then.....just waste the rest of the payout.

RE: Butyl caulk- How do I get it to look good?

I have gotten the best results by using a plastic knife or credit card and actually cutting the excess along the edge you want to leave. Angle the cutter and go slow, you will get the idea real quick as you attempt it. Good luck with it. I actually don't cut it square, but leave a slight angle from the outer piece toward the panel. Square cuts are just a place for dirt to collect.

B4UDIE

B4UDIE This is one of the new buzz words the State of Alaska Tourism Division has been using to stir up frenzy, trying to boost the numbers of tourists coming to Alaska. Some have asked "When should I come to Alaska?". I guess this sums it up, as a good answer. What do you think? My personal perception is, that you should see it while you are still young enough to really experience it. To simply view it from a windshield perspective or from a seat on a tour boat is not adequate.

RE: how do you ignore the pesty fellow camper/neighbor

How do you get a husband with a stroke to listen to you when HE'S the one that wanders over and talks? He's an overly friendly sort of guy and wants to "help", but "help" is the last thing they want. Example: This week we went out to Lake Ouachita State Park and ended up having the campsite next to people we know well from church. Young couple, 2 babies and a babysitter to help out since mom is pregnant again. We didn't know they were going, and vice versa. We volunteered our bathroom to them because the bathroom was 2 blks. away and for a pregnant lady that's tough. That's not the problem and they appreciated it and took us up on the offer. But just 1 thing DH did was to go over and say something to the effect of "Here, put up these lights so you can have more light." Problem is, they didn't WANT more light - they wanted it dark so the babies would go to sleep. I told him - ASK - don't TELL! I apologized to them...good thing we're friends. But he'd do the same with strangers. Just "wanting to help". He loves camping and wants everyone to have a great camping experience, but doesn't realize he's part of the problem. Can't get him to listen to me - gonna do what he wants. Suggestions? Honor Him, He is a Saint.

RE: fuel at 4.89

well, I just saw my first two stations up here in the North East coming in at 4.89 for diesel.I cant believe how close we are to the dredded 5.00 mark:( It's a coming. And, from what I here coming from the Oil Giants in Alaska, in six months from now, you would pleased as punch to pay 5 bucks a gallon. Doubling that figure is what is expected by late fall. Bush communities in Alaska already surpass that, but some of the lucky ones are subsidized by the Federal Govt, to help offset the costs. Someone has to pay the difference, and that is all the working class.

RE: A brighter side to rising fuel prices!

For every gallon each of you save by parking your rigs, I am going to burn three. Too many toys to park them all, and we need all the global warming we can get.

Alaskan Mosquito's 2

I am developing a proposal to go before the Alaska Board of Game, that will reclassify the Alaskan Mosquito as a Big Game Species. Doing so, will allow the Alaska Dept of Fish and Game to manage them into extinction or at least as an endangered species. They have been very successful in managing other species to this level like Caribou and Moose. I will need your best horror stories to relate the menace to the Board. This is probably our best chance for ridding ourselves of the critters.

RE: Exhaust brakes

If you choose to go with any model of exhaust brake, make absolutely sure the surge or electric brakes are working to their full potential on the vehicle being towed. There have been many, many wrecked trucks and trailers up here, on icy roads because the trailer brakes were not slowing down the trailer as fast as the exhaust brakes were slowing down the truck. Jack-knifed situations are always the result. They work best on single vehicle applications.

Pavement

Just wondering what the mileage difference would have been to the lower 48, if Joe Hazlewood had been successful in his attempt at paving the Alaska Marine Highway. That guy should get a medal, as he put more Alaskans to work than all the Governors of the state combined.

RE: Bad Diesel in Alaska Costs Approx. $2,000.00

Diesel fuel in a NON-Regulated substance in US and Canada. Consuumer beware sort of deal. So I always treat my tanks with Shell Rotella Diesel Fuel Additive. Nothing else will do for me. Most vehicle manufactures do not put an adequate water filter on their base models. Therefore you also need to add a new filter.
